hi, i'm sara taylor eggleston, i'm here to assess joanie's workstation and provide her with some education on how to set up her workstation. hi joanie. hi sara. how are you? i'm fine, thank you. good. well, there is a little tension in my neck. okay. you know actually that was one of the firstquestions i was going to ask you: do you have any symptoms or discomfort? because i may talk about changing some things in your workstation. yeah i mentioned my neck is always tense. and i seem to raise my shoulders a lot and it just causes pain in that area and in my low back as well. alright, so we're going to pull back from the stationa little bit and just look at how your chair is adjusted first. i'd like to start with that, so go ahead and scoot your chair back a little bit.
all right, what want to do is have our arms at a ninety degree angle when we work. it's very important that you maintain your arms at a ninety and that means that your chair supports your arm at that position as well and you want to be able to rest your arm on your arm rest. so let's bring these arm rests up about four inches. that should take away some of that stress on your armand let you just relax back into your chair. yep, very good. and now put your arms on your arm rest and put your fingertips straightforward. and what this tells me is your fingertips are approximately four inches below the height of the work surface. so, in order for you not to have to lift up your armsand not have to reach, we need to raise the chair
to accommodate working at this height. okay. so let's raise your chair approximatelythree to four inches. very good. now notice after raising your chair those three inchesthat your fingertips are slightly over the height of the work surface. now turn your chair to go towards your keyboard. and bring it as close as you can. what happens now? do you notice, you can't reach.i can't reach the keyboard! and, your armrests hit the desk. and this is a problem we run into all the time, when anybody has the keyboard placed back from the edge of the surface
it makes us naturally keep our chair too low, have our arm rests too low, and it makes it so the only way to get to your keyboardis to have the chair and the armrest too low to allow the chair to slide under the desk so thatyou can reach that keyboard. the solution is not modifying the chair;the solution is to bring the keyboard to the edge of the surface. whenever a keyboard is not on the edge of a surface, you're gonna have an ergonomic problem. because the person can't reach it. what we would need to do is bring that to the edge of the surface. you being left handed, we look at the station we decide you want to have the computer on your right surface and that will put left writing surfaceon your dominant left side.
all right, joanie, now that we have adjusted your chair, approximately three inches higher, your arms can be at that ninety degree angleto your keyboard that we placed at the edge of your work surface and do you see how you're not having to lift your arms up or reach at all to that keyboard? it makes a big difference, doesn't it? now when you use your mouse, you want to be able tohave your arm rest on the arm rest. and be able to use your entire arm to operate the mouse. so go ahead and put your hand, alright. now, if you notice, the wrist rest is in the way. we want to move anything that obstructs you from being able to operate the mouse. so let's turn this wrist rest.
and then it places your arm without any obstruction;your wrist can be maintained at a neutral position and allow you to use your whole arm when you operate the mouse. you really should be able to relax into the chair now, your arms are supported by the arm rest. and get full support from not only the chairbut also just your arm rest as well. all right, in review, what you want to do ismake sure that the keyboard and monitor are aligned, which you have, and the mouseis next to the keyboard, which you also have. you want the top of the screen to be at your eye levelor slightly below, we accomplished that. the most important thing we accomplished wasgetting your arms to be at that ninety degree angle, so that your wrists are neutral, not bent.we moved the keyboard from the corner to
bringing it the edge of the surface tothat you can minimize your reach. chair adjusted to provide good back support, raised the chair up much higher, encouraged you to sit back for lumbar support and we also raised your arm rest so they were levelwith the work surface to allow you to get arm support. feet flat on the floor or foot rest.your feet were fine. even though we raised the chair you are still ableto have your legs and thighs level. you do not need to add a foot rest. and writing surface and telephone in close reachwe kept that to your left so you can easily access your phone and your writing surface.
